NEW DELHI: Cops had to shut movement of vehicles on the Madhav Rao Scindia Marg in Lutyens' Delhi after a large portion of the road caved in on Saturday evening.
Police said that the entire stretch had been barricaded to prevent further damage to the road.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the stretch and use alternate roads.
Drivers going towards Feroz Shah Road were diverted through the parallel roads. Traffic officers said that since the road was comparatively less busy than the other stretches there were no major traffic snarls due to the diversion.
NDMC officials said, "The reason behind the cave in and extent of the damage are being established and a team from the road division is examining the stretch".
The police said that it would take at least a fortnight for the cave-in to be repaired.
A senior NDMC official supervising the work said that dewatering was being carried out on Saturday evening and the line crossing the road would be diverted. The possibility of a rain-water seepage could be a reason behind the cave-in.
“We are working towards opening the traffic on an urgent basis. The line is being diverted and the cave-in is being filled. Repair work will go on in half portion while the rest will be opened up by tomorrow," a traffic officer said.
The road connects Feroz Shah Road to the KG Marg but fortunately has at least two parallel stretches also connected to the same stretch of road.
